White House spark Canada fury with wild post after USA hockey gold at Winter Olympics
Team USA secured victory over Canada at the Winter Olympics on Sunday, with President Donald Trump's administration rubbing salt in the wounds of their bitter rivals with a brutal social media upload
The White House mocked their bitter rivals as Team USA secured gold over Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics. It was a heated final at Milano Cortina on Sunday, with US-based fans seeing their country clinch their first gold medal in the event since 1980's miracle on ice.
Jack Hughes scored the golden goal a minute into overtime, as his team-mates and fans watching from the stands of the Santa Giulia Arena erupted in jubilation. Across the pond, meanwhile, the White House's official X page also got amongst the celebrations, taunting their neighbours in the process.
Shortly after their team emerged as the event's victors, the account shared a photograph of a bald eagle thrusting its razor sharp talons into the head of a Canadian goose. The post also mentioned an old post from ex-Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, in the aftermath of last year's 4 Nations: Face-Off tournament.
That post, from February 2025, read: "You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game," marking Canada's win over USA in the NHL's international tournament. Sunday's win marked the first time that USA had beaten their neighbours in a gold medal game since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
That event saw Mike Richter in flying form to deny the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, to name a couple. However, Sunday's celebrations, in a new age of social media, attracted a wealth of criticism from Canadian fans online.
Responding to the White House's post, one user wrote: "I had to triple check to verify this is actually a govt run account," while another added: "As an American, I find this post by our white house to be absolutely abhorrent and disgusting. Delete it."
A third, said: "This is such an embarrassing tweet for the White House to be making. Lol," while a fourth wrote: "Mocking a country with a violent image is disgusting and beneath the White House. Respect matters, especially toward Canada."

Elsewhere, other users were quick to point out how Canada have historically enjoyed far more success in the game that USA have. One post, which received 877 likes, included a graphic which showed that Canada have won 37 gold medals across all medal-related games to USA's four.
Another, meanwhile, highlighted how Canada have 24 Olympic medals in the sport in total, 14 of which coming in the form of gold. The comments will do very little to disturb an elated Team USA, however, who will likely be fully focused on celebrating their win as a team.
Speaking after his game-winning goal, Hughes said: "I can’t even believe this. I mean it’s such an unbelievable game, USA-Canada. Such a good game. There’s so many great players.
"We’re a great team. That’s exactly how we wanted it to go. We’re underdogs to Canada, [but we] beat them. It could have gone either way."
Meanwhile, taking to Truth Social, US President Donald Trump also shared a message of congratulations to the team. He wrote: "Congratulations to our great U.S.A. Ice Hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD. WOW! President DONALD J. TRUMP."
