Trump's speech was interrupted by heckles of "you should be ashamed" as he claimed immigrants had "imported" corruption and crime into the US

Donald Trump's State of the Union address descended into chaos after he unleashed a vile racist tirade and ranted about being denied an illegal third term in office.

The unhinged President was met with heckles of "you should be ashamed" as he claimed immigrants had "imported" corruption and crime into the US. He repeatedly complained about Democrats failing to stand and applaud during his speech - at one point staging a stunt by asking those present to stand if they believed their job was to protect US citizens and not "illegal aliens".

As he pulled the stunt, Democrat House member Ilhan Omar shouted: "You have killed Americans. You should be ashamed."

He took aim specifically of people of Somali heritage, branding them "pirates" and accusing them of fraud and corruption. "The Somali pirates who ransacked Minnesota remind us that there are large parts of the world where bribery, corruption, and lawlessness are the norm, not the exception," he said. "Importing these cultures through unrestricted immigration and open borders brings those problems right here, to the USA - and it is the American People who pay the price, in higher medical bills, car insurance rates, rent, taxes, and perhaps most importantly, crime. We will take care of this problem." A huge fraud scheme was uncovered by officials in Minnesota earlier this year, with much of it allegedly committed by Somali Americans daily-mirror-icon_news_politics_donald-trump.

But there's no evidence that the cost of the fraud to the country was anything like the $19 billion Trump claimed it to be. And immigrants to the United States, including people of Somali descent, are dramatically less likely to commit crime than the American-born population. Trump also claimed "many or most" undocumented people are unable to read road signs, and called on congress to pass a bill that would ban them from holding commercial drivers licences. He did not present any evidence for this claim. Of undocumented people, Trump said: "We're getting them the hell out of here fast, we don't want 'em."

Earlier Trump complained that he had been denied an illegal third term in office after "strange things happened" in the 2020 election. Trump has repeatedly lied about election fraud "stealing" the election from him. In reality he lost the election to Joe Biden by several million votes. Trump was rocked by a huge backlash over his mass deportation programme after two US citizens were killed by ICE immigration agents during the surge of enforcement in Minnesota.

An IPSOS poll earlier this month found 62% of Americans thought ICE officers had gone too far - an increase over the 58% found in a poll taken before the shooting of Alex Pretti, a nurse who was killed while protesting peacefully in Minneapolis. Asked about the shooting, just 33% thought it was a necessary use of force, with 43% saying they were not sure.

Overall, a Washington Post/ABC News poll found 60% of Americans said they disapproved of the job Trump is doing - with 47% indicating strong approval. Just 39% said they approved of his performance, the lowest of any President ahead of a second-year State of the Union in modern history. The last time Trump's disapproval reached 60% was shortly after the January 6th Insurrection in the final days of his first term.
